Oakdale Remembrance Day
Sunday 11th November 11am - World War I Centenary

Join us in the Square for the village's biggest annual event, when we remember the war dead of our community. The march will assemble 10.40am at the Presbyterian Church in Penmaen Avenue and the Service will be at 11am, supported as usual by Oakdale Silver Band. We thank David Morgan for taking on the organisation of the event from this year.

Huggamug Cafe will open from 9am for light refreshments. After the service refreshments will again be available in the Community Centre for everyone (not just those taking part). They have been kindly supplied by our local Co-op shop. ☞ View poster

WW1 Commemorative Booklet – last chance to buy
This will be your last chance to buy a copy of 'Oakdale's Lost Generation – the stories of our First World War Fallen' at £1 each. This fascinating booklet tells the stories of all the local men who died in the war, including some not on the memorial, but had links with the village.

They will be switched on between 4.30pm and midnight daily. Installation work will be carried out by the Council's approved contractors Centregreat Limited. [ Read more... ]

Around the Village

'Hotel' re-opens
The former Oakdale Hotel re-opened in July as 'Oakdale House' - nine new flats provided by Pobl Housing Group, together with three adjacent family town houses in Central Avenue. This is a prime example of the Partnership's aims to regenerate our community and the delivery of a scheme which we have long fought for. The opening event was attended by the Assembly's Housing Minister and Caerphilly Cabinet Member for Housing who both highly commended the conversion project. We warmly welcome all the new residents to our village.

School gates project
We've reached agreement with Caerphilly Council about re-siting the gates from the former Oakdale Comprehensive School. They will be re-erected on new pillars to be built at the top end of Aberconway Gardens (the Square) at the approach from Penmaen Avenue. The scheme is being costed and as the gates were originally sponsored by Brace's Bakery, we plan to dedicate them to the memory of the late Mr Colin Brace, who did so much for our community.

TOPP planters
Our grateful thanks to the volunteers who have planted and watered the large flower planters around the village – Adrian, Carol & Steve, Ken & co, Kevin, Sue, and Geoff. They have now planted them with Spring bulbs.

Gwent's Best Kept Village – another double!
For the second year running, Oakdale has been judged the winner in Gwent's Best Kept Village competition in categories:
● Best Kept Post-industrial Village; and
● Most Energy-efficient Village Hall or Community Centre
Thanks to you, our residents, for helping us to maintain a 'tidy' village.

Co-op 'divi' – D-day approaches
We are one of the local groups to receive this year's Co-op Community Dividend, together with Jack's Appeal/ Welsh Hearts. This will be handed over on Saturday 23 November in our local shop. Thanks to all who supported both causes.

Development news
Many residents have been concerned at recent developments such as new housing and the mobile phone mast below Central Avenue. Although Caerphilly Council turned the applications down, they were overturned by the Welsh Government.

Community Centre News

Community Centre improvements
Two projects have been completed to improve our Centre's 'green' credentials: batteries to store the surplus energy from the solar panels and a lighting upgrade to LED. CCTV security has also been improved, and the lower floor re-carpeted and redecorated. The work cost £14,000 and was helped by a Council grant of £7,000. [ Read more... ]

Volunteer needed
The Centre needs a volunteer to take over from the current Treasurer in due course. This person would join the Management Committee and learn the job in the coming months. Full training will be given so, if interested, please contact rogerevans23@hotmail.com or phone 222160 for more details.
